The Spitfire, the famous fighter plane, was designed and developed in Southampton. You can see the important role the city played in the history of flight at Solent Sky, the Museum of Aviation. Southampton is a busy port city, and as such has numerous sea links to countries across the world, however the port is mainly used for freight (particularly containers) and cruises. There are no international ferry services, however regular vehicle and passenger ferries operate to Cowes on the nearby Isle Of Wight and the village of Hythe across the water.

Red Funnel's Red Jet Hi-Speed service, in conjunction with South West Train's Southampton-London Waterloo service is the quickest route to the Isle of Wight from London.
Parking is available at the Town Quay Triangle car park off Platform Road and Town Quay Road. The City Council operate other public car parks in the Waterfront area.
