More About Kissamos

Kissamos, also known as Kastelli, is located on the western side of Crete. Kissamos is well-equipped with banks, restaurants and cafés, medical facilities and a wide range of accommodation; there are apartments for rent, hotels and camp sites, making it a haven for tourists.

There are shops selling leather, folklore items and gold in Kissamos. Kissamos is an ancient city and there are many archaeological sites to visit and you can learn about the history of the region at nearby Falassarna and Polyrinia.

Set amid a beautiful landscape of hills draped with olive trees on the west of Crete is the district of Kissamos. The capital of the area is the town of Kastelli, also called Kissamos. Kissamos has two ports; an old fishing port that has facilities for mooring small boats and a newer port that operates ferry services connecting to the Greek islands of Kithira, the Peloponnese (Kalamata and Gythion) and the Piraeus.

Kissamos Beaches
What to Do in Kissamos

A favourite pastime in Kissamos is to hire a bicycle or a motorbike and sightsee the surrounding areas. A day-long bicycle tour usually covers a trip to the lagoon of Balos, Rokka, the ruins of Polyrinia, Koleni Potamida and Lousakies.

Motorbike tours take you as far as the beaches of Sfinari; the 17th century Byzantine monastery; the seaside coast of Fasasarna, noted for its spectacular sunset; the Agia Sofia cave in Topolia and other places around Kissamos. You can hire both bicycles and motorbikes quite easily at Kissamos. The vehicles are usually in good condition, but drivers must be over 18 years old to ride a motorbike and they must have a valid driving licence.

Kissamos also has many beautiful beaches on which to laze, swim and sunbathe at including Mavros Molos and Telonio.

Tourist Attractions

Katelli, the capital of Kissamos, is a central starting point fro which to begin exploring the region. Visit Polirinia, where the ancient ruins from the 6th century Roman, Byzantine and Venetian eras can be viewed.

At Falasarna, a fishing village, there are wonderful sandy beaches, and just a few hundred metres away lie the remains of the old ancient city and harbour.

Two beautiful Byzantine churches can be visited at Lousakies. Scattered throughout Kissamos are several quaint cafés and restaurants that will charm visitors with old world hospitality.

Travel by Bus and Shuttles

There is a regular bus service from Chania to and from Kissamos. The journey by bus takes about 1 hour, 30 minutes. Buses leave Chania every 45 minutes and tickets are reasonable priced. Fewer buses run on the weekends. Buses from Hania run on a 45-minute schedule except on Saturdays and Sundays, when services are more sporadic. It is also possible to hire a car or taxi to get to Kissamos Port.
